Estate planning is unique to every individual. The purpose, however, is essentially the same for everyone. That purpose is to create a tailor-made plan that carries out your vision to ensure you and your family’s financial stability and future well-being. This plan may include such things as a:

  • Living Will/Advanced Health Care Directive allowing you to make decisions regarding medical treatments you may or may not want in the event of incapacitation;
  • Last Will & Testament wherein you name a personal representative to oversee the satisfaction of your debts and distribution of your assets upon your passing;
  • Trust wherein you define how your money and property will be managed and distributed, identify who will manage those assets, and name the parties benefiting from the trust; and
  • Power of Attorney giving someone else legal authority to act on your behalf, with broad or limited parameters.

This is a basic overview with generic definitions. Creating an appropriate estate plan requires an in-depth session wherein I listen to your goals and ask the necessary questions to learn who and what matters most to you, such as whether you need to elect a guardian for minor children; provide for an elderly or disabled loved one without disrupting their state benefits; avoid or reduce estate taxes; or shield your legacy from your beneficiaries’ creditors.  Whatever the goal, together we will create an estate plan that fits your needs. Upon completion, your estate plan will be maintained and updated, per your request, or a change in law to ensure its continued validity.

Estate planning is necessary for all, and when done correctly, it provides peace of mind that is invaluable. Know that The Carter Law Firm is here to serve you and cares about what matters most to you.
